Welcome to our list of The Most Overrated Designer Bags!
What makes a designer bag overrated? Maybe you see them too much, or they are overpriced, either way, some bags get more attention than they should. Here I’ll show you which bags in my opinion are overrated, they are still great bags I just think there are some better options on the market. Let me know in the comments which bags you think are overrated!
So, without further ado here are The Most Overrated Designer Bags:
1. Hermès Birkin Bag
Yes, I’m saying that the most famous and popular bag in the world is overrated. The Birkin was designed in 1983 when Hermès creative director Jean-Louis Dumas set next to the actress Jane Birkin on a flight. She was wearing a straw tote and explained that most leather bags were too structured for her taste. So Dumas designed the bag on that flight on the back of a napkin. Today the Birkin is an icon and is the kind of bag that will last you your whole life.
I love the Birkin bag, I would buy it no doubt about it, but I’m saying it is overrated because there are other bags from the brand I like better. And wee see the Birkin so much, whether on movies or I real life, that it is loosing its exclusivity factor a bit. What do you think? Is the Birkin bag overrated?
2. Gucci Dionysus Bag
The crossbody purse has a double-flap design made of Gucci’s iconic coated canvas, and the U-shaped hardware used to close it dates back to the brand’s fall 2015 ready-to-wear line. Dionysus is the god of harvest, wine, and partying, so it makes sense that the bag bearing his name has a more-is-more aesthetic. The bag’s tiger closure was also influenced by mythology; it is said that Dionysus crossed the Tigris River on a tiger that Zeus sent to him. The sliding chain strap can be worn multiple ways. You can double it for shoulder carry or lengthen for crossbody wear.
This is my personal opinion but I think this bag is too much. Too flashy, too loud. But if you like it go for it!
3. Prada Galleria Bag
Few things are more classic than the Prada Galleria bag, rooted in tradition, the Galleria is more than just a bag, it’s an icon. Though the bag was originally introduced in 2007, the history of the bag dates back to Prada’s humble beginnings. The bag gets its name from the “Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II”, which is where Mario Prada opened his first store in Milan in 1913. Reminiscent of the frame-shapes and medicine-style bags popular in the mid-century, the Galleria bag references classic styles of the past while remaining current. This is the most classic bag of the brand and I do love this bag, but my problem with it is that I believe it is overpriced and it doesn’t hold to its value at all on the resale market.
The Saint Laurent Sac de Jour has a very similar style but it sold for half the price.
4. Louis Vuitton Capucines
The now-classic Capucines handbag displays a host of House signatures: leather-wrapped LV Initials, jewel-like handle mounts inspired by historic trunks, and a distinctive flap with a Monogram Flower motif. Timelessly elegant, this charming model can be carried by hand or worn cross-body on its detachable strap. First launched in 2013, the Capucines is named for the Parisian street where Louis Vuitton first opened shop, in 1854. Since its launch, this bag has become one of the most famous Louis Vuitton bags. The quality of the bag and the attention to the detail is unmatched.
This is a great designer bag, but once again I believe it is overpriced. It costs around seven thousand dollars while most bags of the brand are around the three thousand dollars range.
5. Chloé Woody Tote
Crafted from lower-impact linen canvas detailed with shiny calfskin strips, this medium Woody tote bag is a spacious bag with a strong summer attitude. The roomy inside compartment will fit all your daily essentials and includes a practical flat pocket. The bag’s sharp, modern lines are emphasized by the contrasting vertical leather strips and the signature Chloé logo ribbon, carried over from the Maison’s Woody mule. Carry this tote bag comfortably on the shoulder or by hand, it is a practical tote perfect for everyday wear!
This is a fine tote bag, but there are so many other canvas tote bags I like better I do think this one is overrated.
6. Chanel Classic Flap
The Chanel handbag that would ultimately become synonymous with the brand was not created until 1983. The Chanel Classic Double Flap was first introduced when Karl Lagerfeld became creative director and decided to reinterpret Chanel’s iconic 2.55 Flap Bag. From his artistic vision came two new features – a leather woven chain and Double C turn-lock closure. Lagerfeld’s Classic Double Flap was a breakout success. Almost forty years later, and out of all the Chanel handbags on the market, the Classic Double Flap remains one of the most sought-after pieces ever crafted.
I love the Chanel Flap, but there is not a single reason why this bag should cost ten thousand dollars. It is extremely overpriced.
7. Saint Laurent LouLou Bag
Designed in 2017 by Anthony Vaccarello, this is one of the most well-known styles of the brand. Named after LouLou de la Falaise, Yves Saint Laurent’s close friend and muse for more than three decades, the LouLou is one of the most beloved bags in Saint Laurent’s arsenal. Is a classic flap style bag that also has a more laidback style. Its hallmarks are its soft but boxy structure, front flap closure, and quilted chevron finish. Having become a staple of Saint Laurent’s accessories offerings, the LouLou is now available in more sizes, ranging from a small over-the-shoulder bag to one that’s oversized enough to carry your laptop or whatever else you may need. There is also the puffer version if you would like a cooler vibe.
The LouLou is the most popular and famous bag of the brand, but Saint Laurent has so many other amazing options I do think this one is overrated.
8. Dior Book Tote
The Book Tote was launched in 2018 and since then has been one of the most popular designer tote bags! It’s not difficult to see why Dior’s Book Tote remains so popular – the style, which has fast become a staple of the house, is the perfect way to elevate any daytime ensemble. The Dior Book Tote is distinguished by its seamless combination of sophistication and relaxed style. The Maria Grazia Chiuri creation has been reimagined in an array of silhouettes and styles, each one as elegant as the last. The tote exemplifies the House’s signature savoir-faire and may be carried by hand or worn over the shoulder.
Don’t get me wrong, this is a great tote bag, but there are so many tote options I get tired of seeing this one over and over again. Still a beautiful bag though.
