The 1990’s were filled with amazing designer bags that until this day are iconic. Here I’ll show you bags that were launched in the 90’s and will always be chic, they will never go out of style.
So, without further ado here are The 90’s Designer Bags That Will Always Be In Style:
1. Lady Dior
A bag that was designed almost 30 years ago in honor of one of the biggest style icons in fashion history, the Lady Dior is a classic! In 1995 Bernadette Chirac, then First Lady of France, requested Dior to custom design a bag for Lady Diana. The bag was gifted to the princess while she was on an official visit to Paris. It instantly became one of her favorite bags! After that Lady Diana was spotted multiple times carrying the bag, so Dior decided to change its name to the Lady Dior in 1996, with the princess’s blessing. Described as iconic and legendary the brand launched the bag in a larger series, becoming a favorite of Dior clients.
This is an iconic 90’s handbag that will always be in style!
2. Fendi Baguette Bag
It was 1997, when minimalism was all the rage, that Fendi launched the first It Bag in history, the Fendi Baguette. The bag was anything but minimalist, but because of its iconic style and pop culture it became one of the most important bags in fashion history. The bag was designed by Silvia Venturini Fendi. It was intended to be worn under the arm in the very same way French people are usually seen carrying their baguettes. The bag was a breakout success. More than 100,000 bags were sold in the first year alone, and its appearance in Sex and The City solidified it’s place as the ultimate It Bag.
Today, 26 years after its debut, the Fendi Baguette, remains a stylish it bag that is iconic of the brand. And one of the most classic designer shoulder bags!
3. Chanel Shopping Tote
A wardrobe staple and icon of the 90’s and early-2000s, the Shopping Tote is a long-time favorite among Chanel handbag lovers. Designed in three sizes – the Petite Shopping Tote, the Grand Shopping Tote, and the Grand Shopping Tote XL – the standard Grand Shopping Tote is the ultimate classic. Best recognized for its roominess and tasteful simplicity, the Chanel Shopping Tote is only available in classic quilting. Additionally, only two hardware colors – gold and silver – were ever offered. After the GST was discontinued in 2015, the desirability of these Chanel handbags skyrocketed.
Today, the Chanel Shopping Tote is a rare vintage find, coveted among those in the know. It will never go out of style!
4. Dior Saddle Bag
The Saddle Bag was first created in 1999 at the peak of John Galliano’s Dior tenure. Its initial appearance toed the line between what was considered high fashion and, for lack of a better word, ugly. The bag is intended to be worn short trapped and tight against the arm like a saddle, hence the name. After the enormous success of the bag in the 2000’s, the bag was discontinued in the 2010’s. In 2018 Maria Grazia Chiurri relaunched this bag and it has since become a part of the classic styles of the brand. The Dior Saddle bag takes its cues from the equestrian world. The inspiration can be seen in the graphic design with the now iconic asymmetrical flap.
One of the most classic shoulder bags ever, the Saddle is an icon!
5. Chanel Diana Bag
Constantly seeking inspiration from the world around him, Karl Lagerfeld placed tremendous value in his muses, as these fashionable women helped solidify his designs as timeless classics. As such, Princess Diana of Wales, the ultimate style icon of the ‘80s and ‘90s, had a tremendous impact on Lagerfeld and the living legacy of Chanel. Produced from 1989 to approximately 1995, the Chanel Diana bag is a coveted find among vintage hunters and Diana admirers alike. This classic design closely resembles that of the Chanel Single Flap, and was sported so frequently by Princess Diana, that Karl Largefeld felt it only fitting to honor her in the name.
Following Diana’s divorce, rumor had it she didn’t like the Chanel logo, as the interlocking CCs reminded her of her ex-husband, Charles, and his new partner, Camilla. However, eventually, Diana did return to the classic brand and was often seen carrying their bags. The handbag was resurrected in the Spring 2015 collection, but the vintage Chanel Diana in caviar leather remains the most elusive and sought-after variation ever crafted.
The Chanel Diana is not currently sold by Chanel, but you can find it on the resale market!
6. Prada Re-Edition 1995
Originally launched in 1995 and then relaunched in 2022, this bag will always be chic! Prada is known for reinventing classic styles and this bag is one of their latest launches. This handbag, a re-edition of an iconic Prada bag of 1995, was first presented in Prada’s spring/summer 22 collection. It is characterized by its elegant geometric silhouette with distinct, minimalist lines. Formal allure and practicality meet in its design with a central zipper closure and three internal compartments, enhanced by the sophisticated accent of the silver screen-printed lettering logo. The accessory is made of fine brushed leather, an expression of the brand’s expertise.
This bag is elegant, minimalist and was a favorite of Carolyn Bessette-Kennedy.
